Make your very own Greeting Card this December 9!
Did you know that Sir Henry Cole of England sent the first commercial Christmas Card? Way back in 1843, Sir Henry Cole was a civil servant who thought of the idea of sending greetings through notes. Though the practice of sending greeting cards can be traced as far back to the Ancient Chinese, Sir Henry Cole was the first to commission an artist, John Calcott Horsley, to design one. This marked the start of the holiday greeting card industry.
The Christmas Card created a new industry!
By the 1850s, greeting cards changed from simple notes to cards with beautiful and intricate designs. It was a hand-delivered and handmade gift that was both an affordable and popular means of personal communication. This was possible due to the advances in printing technology and a reduction of postal rates due to the introduction of postage stamps.
Due to the influence made by sending a commercial greeting card, a holiday was made to honor its inventor. Christmas Card Day falls on December 9 of every year. With the propagation of the greeting card sending tradition, mostly all holidays have their own greeting card themes and designs. The cards for the Christmas season alone can have more than thousands of unique, intricate, and beautiful designs. Most cards now also have premade messages inscribed on them. Because of their popularity, some businesses like Hallmark Cards have made creating greeting cards their primary service.
