Can March come soon enough and just celebrate all things geeky? For those who have missed the news, the highly-anticipated ComicCon Asia 2018 will happen on March 24 to 25, 2018 at the SMX in Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The ComicCon Asia is an annual gathering of fans who love of comics, movies, series, manga, anime, toys, gaming, and cosplay.
During the last week of January, ComicCon Asia revealed their stellar lineup for this year’s con such as Pinoy comic book artists Harvey Tolibao and Carlo Pagulayan who will be conducting a workshop for aspiring artists. Walt Disney’s Visual Development Artist, Armand Serrano, will also be there to talk about his experience making films like Big Hero 6, Mulan, and Lilo and Stitch.
For cosplayers, you are definitely in for a treat as Chad Hoku (Hoku Props) will also be giving a talk on how to create amazing armor cosplay costumes and Linda Le (Vampy Bit Me) will be hosting a workshop on how to make stunning fabric cosplay costumes.
Activities at the Upcoming ComicCon Asia
Aside from trading your collectibles and other geek finds, there are 2 major activities at ComicCon Asia you should not miss! And it is the Cosplay Match-up contest, The Great Filipino Graphic Novel Contest, and Project X: The Search For the Next Pinoy Superheroes.
Cosplay Match-up Contest
Passionate and creative cosplayers, newbies and those who have been cosplaying for a long time can join this exciting contest on March. This is where they can display their craft and skills to the test and go head-to-head with other cosplayers. Online registration is now open and will end on March 11. Eliminations will be held on March 24 and finals on March 25.
Take note that the Cosplay Match-up is open to all nationalities.
- Competitors must be eleven (11) years old or older. All competitors under the age of eighteen (18) are required to present a signed PARENTAL CONSENT FORM during the registration process (click HERE to register online). Failure to comply may result to disqualification.
- Competing as a character of a different gender is allowed. Genderbent cosplay is disallowed (i.e. a character written as male may not be switched into female, and vice-versa). The Committee shall only accept the original / dominant gender of the source material.
- Re-interpretation of source characters is disallowed. All interpretations must stem from a definable source material. A Photo Print-Out will be required of the source material.
- All characters must be from mainstream / widely popular Western and Filipino, gaming and anime fandoms / genre (comics, literary, TV series, or cinematic versions).
- All categories are for INDIVIDUAL participants only, no group category.
- There are three (3) available categories with two (2) sub-categories each open for competition.
- Anime (Fabric/Armor)
- Gaming (Fabric/Armor)
- Western / Filipino (Fabric/Armor)
- Each competitor can only join one category / sub-category.
All competitors must be physically present at the designated holding area at least 1 hour before the start of the competition. Competitors shall observe that only finishing touches can be done by assembly time to ensure the smooth running of the competition. Costume transformations onstage will not be allowed during the pre-judging phase. These may only be permitted during the final judging (day 2).
COSTUME ACCURACY (30%)
Winners shall be announced during the Awarding Ceremony, and names of the winners will be posted online.
The Great Filipino Graphic Novel Contest
Let those creative juices flow and join The Great Filipino Graphic Novel Contest! If you win this contest, you will get a chance to be guided by the industry’s top creatives. They will mentor and critique your output and have you vying for a chance to be hailed as creators of the next great Filipino graphic novel.
All you have to do is simply create a full-color 36-page comic book, excluding cover, using Philippine culture as your source material. Your work is expected to inspire readers to act for the betterment of self, community, or the country.
If you are done with your material, download the application form in their website. Upon submission of proposals, Comicon Asia will be choosing 8 finalists. Only the 8 chosen finalists will proceed to the next step. No further entries will be accepted. Winners will then be selected from the 8 finalists or whoever is able to meet the final submission deadline.
