December 8 is a holy day that is celebrated by Catholics the world over! This is the day to honor the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The Blessed Virgin Mary’s Immaculate Conception
The Feast of the Immaculate Conception falls on December 8 of every year. This holiday celebrates the holy conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ. According to Roman Catholic teachings, the Blessed Virgin Mary was conceived free from Original Sin and from any form of impurity due to sin. According to Christian teachings, Original Sin is present in every individual person from the moment of conception. This is due to the sins of the first humans, Adam and Eve. Only the holy sacrament of Baptism can wash away Original Sin from one’s body and soul.
The Blessed Virgin Mary and the Philippines
Under the Immaculate Concepion, the Philippines declared the Blessed Virgin Mary as the Patroness of the Philippines in 1942. Because of this, many Filipino Catholics hold the Blessed Virgin Mary in the highest of regards. They often pray to her as an intermediary between the people and her son, Jesus Christ. Throughout the Roman Catholic Church’s history in the Philippines, devotees have attributed countless of miracles to Mother Mary.
Because of this, the Philippines celebrates the Immaculate Conception as one of the most important holidays of the Catholic Church. Malolos, a city in the province of Bulacan, is a perfect example for this. The Malolos Cathedral, known also as the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, goes to great lengths to celebrate this special day of Mother Mary.
A special committee organizes the feast. This committee is in charge of all the decorations, processions, implementations, and fundraising for the feast day. The celebration consists of a nine-day Novena prior to the actual feast day. The Malolos Cathedral will be fully decorated for all of these masses. The nine days will also include a variety of shows and celebrations depicting the culture of Malolos, the talent it possesses, and processions for the Blessed Virgin Mary. The procession around the town often consists of a brass band of about 20 members, preparing the way to the Malolos Cathedral.
Mostly all great cathedrals in the Philippines will celebrate the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Most of Churches will celebrate the holiday with a feast and a mass.
