Sinulog Festival Brief History

Sinulog Festival is a significant festival in Philippines. The annual festival, held on the third Sunday of January, infuses both culture and religion.

It is a dance ritual in honor of the miraculous image of the Santo Nino. The dance moves two steps forward and one step backward to the sound of the drums. This resembles the current (sulog) of what was then known as Cebu’s Pahina River. That is why it is called “Sinulog.” However, some historians say that Sinulog, which is of pagan origin, is the link between the country’s pagan past and its Christian present.

Historians now say that during the 44 years between the coming of Magellan and Legaspi, the natives continued to dance the Sinulog. This time, however, they danced it no longer to worship their native idols but as a sign of reverence to the Santo Nino which is now enshrined at the San Agustin Church (renamed Basilica Minore del Santo Nino).

One of the main highlights of the festival is the grand street parade which lasts for 9 to 12 hours (practically the entire day) with participants coming from the different towns and cities of Cebu and from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao across the Philippines. The Sinulog dance contingents are dressed in bright coloured costumes dancing gracefully to the rhythm of drums, trumpet and native gongs.

More of the Philippines’ festivals? Stay tuned!
