About Altered Carbon
Altered Carbon is an American dystopian science fiction series based on the 2002 novel of the same title by Richard K. Morgan.
The series takes place over 250 years in the future, in the year 2384. Altered Carbon is set in a distant future where humanity has discovered a way to preserve human consciousness.
A person’s memories can be decanted in a disk-shaped device called a ‘cortical stack’, which is implanted in the vertebrae at the back of the neck. Cortical stacks are capable of holding people’s memories. Physical human or synthetic bodies called ‘sleeves’ are used as vessels that can accept any stack.
‘Takeshi Kovacs’, a political operative with mercenary skills, wakes up 250 years after his prior sleeve is removed. He was the sole surviving soldier of those defeated in an uprising against the new world order 250 years ago. A wealthy immortal named ‘Laurens Bancroft’, Takeshi was brought to life in a new body to solve a murder.

Altered Carbon has a lot of terminologies that first-time watchers might have found overwhelming. Since there are so much new terms and concepts to understand in the first season, here are a few terminologies you should know before you watch:
1.) Cortical Stacks
Cortical Stacks are high tech USB drives that can hold a person’s memories. Each stack is capable of being placed into any new body (‘sleeves’). This allows for the possibility of eternal life in a person can afford a new body.
Sleeves are the bodies the Cortical Stacks are transferred into. If you are rich enough, you could potentially live forever. The amount of cash you have affects the kind of sleeves you get. The rich can look young and beautiful forever. The poor might end up with their young daughter in the body of an old woman.
Envoys are an elite fighting squad. Their training centers more on intense mental discipline over physical combat due to constantly switching to different bodies.
4.) Religion and the Justice System
The ability of living forever caused an outcry in the religious community of Bay City. The neo-Catholics don’t agree with the ‘resleeving’ process due to their belief in an individual having only one soul. Those beliefs serve as an obstacle in murder investigations.
