The story takes place in 1987, Bumblebee finds itself in a small beach town junkyard in California. Bumblebee is discovered teenage girl named Charlie Watson who realizes that this is no ordinary yellow VW bug and immediately takes Bumblebee under her wing. However, the two suddenly become hunted by a government sector known as Sector 7 led by Agent Burns. Through their journey, they realize that Bumblebee isn’t the only Transformer there is on earth, and that others could be dangerous.

Bumblebee: A Breath of Fresh Air

Bumblebee The Movie is a great opportunity to switch things up and do things differently from what was established in the movie series. Fans can expect Bumblebee to be relatively new from the other five movies. Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura explains the importance of setting Bumblebee apart from the other movies:

“If you don’t change up, you’re also taking a risk. It’s one of those things where there is no simple answer. You’re taking a risk no matter what you do when you make a big expensive movie, so why not change the formula completely and really hang in there?”

Cast & Crew of Bumblebee The Movie

Hailee Steinfeild, known for her roles in The Edge of Seventeen (2016), Pitch Perfect 2 (2015), and Pitch Perfect 3 (2017), headlines the movie as teenager Charlie Watson. John Cena, known for his roles in The Marine (2006) and Trainwreck (2015), is Agent Burns, the agent who is after Charlie and Bumblebee. The movie also stars Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Rachel Crow, Pamela Adlon, Jason Drucker, Gracie Dzienny, Ricardo Hoyos, and more.

Fans of the franchise are sure to expect something new since it won’t be Michael Bay who will be directing, unlike in the previous Transformers movies. Travis Knight, known for his 2016 animation film Kubo and the Two Strings, has taken up the role as director of Bumblebee. But don’t worry, Transformers fans. Michael Bay is still part of the movie as the executive producer. Other producers include Stephen Davis, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, and Tom DeSanto.

Bumblebee The Movie premieres in the US on December 21, 2018. Expect it in Philippine theaters this January 2019!
