If you’re a fan of biographical period pieces and intrigue, Netflix has good news for you! The second season of The Crown is hitting Netflix on December 8. The series is a biographical drama that centers on the reign of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom from her wedding to present day. The first season focused on her reign from the year 1947 to the year 1955. This time period covers her marriage with Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, to the disintegration of her sister Pincess Margaret’s engagement to Peter Townsend. The second season will focus on the Suez Crisis in 1956 through the retirement of the Queen’s third Prime Minister, Harold Mcmillan in 1963.

Why should you start watching The Crown?

The Crown has received many praises and an overwhelmingly positive reception for the cast’s performance, the direction, writing, and cinematography. Critics also appreciate the accuracy of the events portrayed in the series so far. Some of the accolades that the series has received are the Best Actress Award for Claire Foy and Best Actor Award for John Lithgow at the 23rd Screen Actors Guild Awards. The series also received the Best Drama, Writing, and Directing at the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards.

The cast includes Claire Foy as the titular character, Queen Elizabeth II. Matt Smith plays Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Vanessa Kirby plays Princess Margaret. John Lithgow plays Winston Churchill, the Queen’s first Prime Minister. Other cast members include Eileen Atkins, Victoria Hamilton, Alex Jennings, and other talented actors.

There will be 10 brand new episodes. These episodes will be the last to feature Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth before Olivia Colman replaces her. The change will occur due to the next seasons focusing on Queen Elizabeth when she was in her late 40s and extends to when she was in her early 60s. The rest of the cast will also be replaced for the next seasons.
