While some of us are busy with enjoying our teenage years by falling in love and discovering our teenager selves and emotions, 17-year-old Lea had different things in mind. She was a student at Ateneo de Manila University studying Biology, when the producers of Miss Saigon the musical, landed in the Philippines to begin their search for a strong east Asian singer. Coming straight from school to the PICC to audition, she wowed the panelists with her audition piece, On My Own from the musical Les Miserables, and was then asked to sing Miss Saigon’s Sun and Moon. She was later offered the lead role as Kim at 17-years-old.
She was the first Asian woman to win a Tony Award
When Miss Saigon opened on Broadway in 1991, Lea was asked once again to play the role of Kim. Her Broadway stint earned her a string of accolades including a Theatre World Award and a Tony Award which made her the first Asian woman to win such award.
