Murderous hero on the run, John Wick is back for Chapter 3!

This neo-noir action thriller film never runs out of targets when John Wick’s the world’s greatest assassin. The legendary hitman is back to the screen for more bullet-riddled adventures on May! We already know some of the characters, who will and won’t be returning for the third installment of the franchise in prior updates.

Star Keanu Reeves has said the title means “prepare for war. It’s part of that famous sentence, ‘Si vis pacem, para bellum,’ which translates as, ‘If you want peace, prepare for war.”

After being excommunicated from the Continental for violating the High Table’s rules by killing another assassin on neutral ground, the worldwide hit has been placed on Wick, and the professional must fight to escape New York City if there’s any chance of saving his side. With the bounty on his head, most everyone John’s ever worked with and might have considered an ally now sees him as a target too valuable to give up —except for Sofia (portrayed by Halle Berry), who might end up having some ulterior motives of her own.

Keanu rides a horse through the streets of New York. Cool!

The trailer for the third film finds Keanu riding a horse while being chased by a biker gang wielding swords, because why not? Despite the notorious, heartbreaking fate of his first puppy, the friendly pitbull he picked up in the final scene of John Wick is still alive and well in Parabellum (spoiler!!!)

This cowboy-gentleman-style was the work by Stahelski who directed the two prior films, returned to direct with Hiroyuki Sanada in talks to join the cast.

The connection to Asian cinema is also strengthened in part due to some obvious and not-so-obvious callbacks to The Matrix. The clearest link, apart from the franchises’ shared neo-noir trappings, is that Parabellum continues John Wick’s reunion between Keanu Reeves and his Matrix co-star Laurence Fishburne, playing the inscrutable king of the Bowery in the shadowy world of New York’s underground titans.

First film’s sleeper success in 2014 revitalized Reeve’s career – which is saying something given that he was already one of the most bankable stars of the modern era. It’s also spawned a litany of memes and the perpetual joke that you should never, ever kill John Wick’s dog.

Excited for the next installment of John Wick? Start your countdown as it will premiere in the Philippine cinemas on May!
