‘The Hate U Give’ is based on the bestselling novel of the same by Angie Thomas, which talks about racism and police brutality through the eyes of a 16-year old girl.

The movie, directed by George Tillman Jr., follows Star Carter, who spends her day switching between her black neighborhood and elite high school. After a white cop shoots her childhood best friend, she soon decides to fight against white supremacy.

Star Carter is exposed two contrasting worlds: the poor (mostly black) neighborhood where she lives and the rich (mostly white) prep school she attends.

Her world starts crumbling down after Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her best friend, Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Due to the pressures from all the sides of her community, Starr decides to use her voice, stand up for what’s right, and become an activist.
