This doesn’t even include the X-Men series and movies making its rounds. Legion premiered earlier this year on FX, The Gifted premiered early October. Marvel also dropped a trailer announcing its new thriller movie revolving around The New Mutants. The Comic Book Company has been busy and they have all the shows to show for it. Now, they are releasing The Runaways.
What would happen if your parents are supervillains?
The next upcoming series to premiere after the Punisher is The Runaways. The Runaways focuses on a group of teenagers that seemingly have nothing in common. They meet at their parents annual gathering. At the gathering, they find something very sinister about their parents. Accidentally triggering a hidden door, the group discover a chamber where there parents were. They witness a ritual of some sort taking place. This ritual concludes with their parents sacrificing a teenage girl. The parents realize that their kids discovered the ritual, causing the teenagers to flee the house.
Horrified with what they have seen, they decide that they have to stop their parents. Some of the group steal equipment from their parents and others discover that they have more-than-normal abilities. The Runaways unite to defeat their parents’ organization called The Pride.
Marvel’s Runaways, or simply Runaways, is an upcoming American web television series created for Hulu by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. It is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), sharing continuity with the films and other television series of the franchise. ABC Signature Studios, Marvel Television and Fake Empire Productions produced the series.
To get an idea of who these heroes are, here are their introductions in the comic book series:
Alex, Nico, Karolina, Gert, Chase, and Molly compose the Runaways. In the comic books, each of these characters have different skills in abilities. Some possess metahuman abilities while some rely on equipment and gadgets to perform heroic feats.
The son of Geoffrey and Catherine Wilder, Alex is the first character to be introduced to the series. Alex is the one to initially suggest spying on their parents’ supposed charity organization. After witnessing their parents’ (who were revealed to be a secret crime ring called “the Pride”) murder of an innocent teenage girl, Alex organizes the mass escape from their parents. Alex then obtains the Yorkes’ copy of The Abstract, a magical book that records the past, present, and future deeds of the Pride.
After witnessing the murder of an innocent girl by their parents. Nico joins the others in their massive ransack to run away from their parents. While on the run, Nico encounters her parents. Her mother, wielding a large staff with a ball at the end, reveals that she and Nico’s father are dark wizards; she then attempts to jam the Staff into Nico’s chest. Nico’s body absorbs it. After Dale Yorkes’ Samurai battle-axe cut her, the Staff re-emerges from her chest. The staff enables her to use magic. It is revealed that Nico is a witch and that the Staff only emerges when she bleeds. The series changed this mechanic for the series as the show wants to avoid promoting things like self-harm.
Karolina is the only Runaway who didn’t witness their parents murder an innocent girl as a sacrifice. She denies the entire situation primarily, but finally believes the group soon after discovering she is an alien. The kids decide to go for a massive ransack, and leave home; before leaving for good, they decide to put their parents to justice by collecting certain evidence from their homes. When arriving at the Dean mansion, they find Karolina’s parent’s last will and testament.
Karolina receives a piece of paper with the circular “no symbol” covering the Caduceus. Alex convinces her to remove her medic alert bracelet because the same symbol is on it. Karolina concedes, thinking that she only wears the bracelet because she’s allergic to penicillin, and her skin immediately glows with a fluid, rainbow-like light. Remembering something they heard from the Pride’s sacrifice, the group assumes Karolina is an alien and the bracelet is an anchor to hide her powers.
After the witnessing of the murder of an innocent girl by their parents (“the Pride”), despite being shocked her parents are a part of it, Gert remains the only one not surprised that her parents are actually villains. She had suspected her parents of being evil ever since her pet pig suspiciously disappeared. Gert joins her team in the mass ransack to escape from their respective homes. Before leaving, however, Gert discovers a dinosaur in a hidden room in her basement that has a telepathic bond with Gert’s mind, meaning it obeys her every command. Clueing a holographic message featuring Gert’s parents and the fact her basement is full of rare antiques, the Runaways conclude Gert’s parents are actually time travellers.
After the witnessing of the murder of an innocent girl by their parents, Chase appears not to be surprised, though blames everyone else’s parents for the murder.] Chase joins the team in the mass ransack to escape from their respective homes. While going through Chase’s parents’ homes, he discovers that his parents are mad scientists, with many technological advances. Chase steals the Fistigons, which Janet Stein calls “the world’s strongest gloves”. Able to conjure and mold fire with the gloves, Chase also steals the special X-ray goggles from his parents.
During the human sacrifice ritual, Molly is preemptively escorted away by Karolina while the older children watch the sacrifice commence. They inform Karolina and decide to run away from their homes that very night. After discovering their powers and gifts, the older five kids rescue Molly from her home. Molly awakes from a psychically-induced slumber during the Runaways’ rescue. She sees Nico threatening her mother. Molly’s mutant powers manifest at that moment in a display of glowing pink hair and eyes. However, Molly first uses her strength to knock Leslie Dean out of the sky, saving Gert. Molly promptly falls asleep from exhaustion and the Runaways take her to their new hideout, a dilapidated mansion called “the Hostel.”
The series, consisting of 10 episodes, will premiere on November 21, 2017.
In August 2016, Marvel Television announced that Runaways had received a pilot order from Hulu, after being developed and written by Schwartz and Savage. Filming on the pilot began in Los Angeles in February 2017. Hulu officially ordered the series in May 2017.
